Synopsis of Lets be a Cheerful Ministry

Good and joyful morning to all Christian brothers and sisters on this the day the Lord has made. Pull up a chair, pour yourself a cup of coffee, or tea, or milk, or whatever is your favorite….. We’re about to slice a piece of the bread of life…. The word of God.

Today’s slice comes from: John 16:33 Jesus told his disciples: These things I have spoken unto you, that in me you might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation; but, be of good cheer; I have overcome the world

The title of today’s message “Lets be a Cheerful Ministry,” which reminds me…..

I have started watching “cheerful signs.” Take notice of them. Here are a few I have mentally collected…..
• on a fence — Salesmen welcome! Dog food is expensive
• on front of a muffler shop — No appointment necessary – we heard you coming.
• on the door of a veterinarian waiting room —Be back in 5 minutes – sit! — stay!
• at an optometrist’s office — If you don’t see what you’re looking for….. You’ve come to the right place.
• on an electrician’s truck — Let us remove your shorts.

O.K. I know…. I’m being silly ….. but you know….. we do not stop playing because we grow old… We grow old because we stop playing.

In fact….. I have, over my fireplace mantle, a pencil sketch of Christ……laughing and full of joy. To me it is a side of Jesus that I don’t hear about often enough.
Jesus is …..for my wife and me….. the author of our joy.

That picture, however, has gotten mixed reactions through the years. His eyes squinting from laughter are just too much for some people to handle. They think that Jesus lived every moment of his life ….. serious and solemn. I don’t agree with that. If he hadn’t had joyful times the children would have never come to him so readily while they were playing

Friends…. In order to keep your joy…. you must major on the promise….. and not the problem. And, besides that, living in the joy of the Lord is one of the most effective ways to reach others for Christ. Why? Because every human on earth is searching for joy. That is the one thing everyone wants. So if you live in joy…. others will be drawn to you. The opposite of that is the fact that if you choose to allow the devil and circumstances to replace your joy with anxiety, you will have a hard time reaching others for Christ. Think about it….. Who would want to accept the God of someone that is always beaten down and depressed? So…. Replace all that moaning, and groaning, and criticizing…. with the promises God has given you in His Word.

Now…. The joy of the Lord is not just limited to being an effective witnessing tool…….. According to…. Proverbs 17:22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine; but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

I know you’ve heard that same message many times before, but…. let me try to….. (as my little nephew use to say……) Let me ‘splain’ it to you.
1- Getting intimate does not just mean going to church frequently. It is bearing your heart and soul to him. Talk to him as a friend. And don’t just talk….. listen! Yes…. He does answer.
2- Read His word…. Does not mean to have the preacher read it to you or hear it from a TV evangelist. Those things are great and I hope you do that a lot. But I am speaking here of you yourself reading and not just reading, but, studying the bible….. And asking the Holy Spirit to ‘splain‘ it to you. And when He enlightens you with explanations of what is meant by the words of God…… that itself will bring you joy like you’ve never experienced.

Have you ever met someone whose happiness is like lightning? You know….one flash and it’s gone! Disappeared without a trace. Their happiness is short-lived and it can be reversed by the first sign of trouble. I’m sorry ….. but….. That’s plain stupid. Cheerfulness is infectious…. but…. stupidity is aggravating. Joy is not an emotion, it is a spiritual force that you live with day-in and day-out.

If you asked your neighbors this question, what do you think their answer would be? The question is …. “How can you tell which of our neighbors are Christians?” Would they answer ….. “Those who show love, joy, peace, patience, etc.”
