Synopsis of The Great Commission – for Today
Good and joyful day today to all Christian brothers and sisters on this the day the Lord has made. Pull up a chair, pour yourself a cup of coffee, or tea, or milk, or whatever is your favorite. We’re about to slice a piece of the bread of life, the Word of God. And today’s slice is Matthew 7 : 21 : “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.'”
Many scripture has told us, “all authority in heaven and earth” has been given to Jesus. but we realize that He has not taken that authority over the earth yet. His kingdom is going to come, and His will is going to be done on earth as it is in heaven, as we have been told in the prayer Jesus Himself taught His disciples and us. All of heaven lives under the domain of the King. Only Satan and the angels who followed him have rebelled from the heavenly realm and were cast down to the earth when mankind rebelled against God. Now the only rebellion against God in all of creation, the physical or spiritual realms, is found on planet earth.
Jesus is called “the last Adam” in I Corinthians 15:45. There was a legal reason for this. The first Adam had been given dominion over the earth. When Adam succumbed to the temptation and chose to obey the evil one instead of God, Satan was able to exert his power over the earth, and we become the slaves of the one we obey. We are told in Romans 6:16: Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?
When man fell, all that was under his dominion fell with him, and the earth became the domain of the devil. It was a usurped domain, but this gave the evil one power over the whole earth. The reason why Jesus had to come as a man to redeem the earth was because authority over the earth was given to mankind. This is why Jesus always referred to Himself as “the Son of Man.” Only a man who walked in perfect obedience to the Lord could redeem the earth from the consequences of man’s disobedience. Jesus perfectly fulfilled this and took back the authority over the earth that had been lost by the first Adam.
We can have authority over something and not possess it yet. We could be given a car, the title could be put in our name, and it is at the dealer waiting for us to pick it up. However, until we pick it up, it is not in our possession even though it belongs to us. The title to the earth was put in Jesus’ name immediately after the cross. He just has not come to claim His possession yet in order to allow the conditions on the earth to help prepare His bride, the church, to rule with Him.
The bride of the first Adam lived in the most perfect conditions yet chose to disobey. The bride of the last Adam, Christ, will have lived in the most difficult conditions, and against the onslaught of all the powers of darkness, she will chose to obey. No other creation of God will have endured what she will have endured, and yet she will be faithful. This will be a witness to even the principalities and powers that their time is up over the earth. Even the angels will marvel at her and consider her worthy to be their judges. She will be a worthy bride and joint heir for the Son of God.
My friends that bride is no other than we – us – me and you, and all other true Christians. The main reason the Lord did not take His authority over the earth immediately after His resurrection was to seek a bride. The wife of the first Adam disobeyed the Lord and submitted to the devil, but the wife of “the last Adam” would resist the devil and prove her love for the Lord by her obedience. At all cost, against the opposition of the entire earth and even hell itself, she would follow the Lord.
This entire age since the resurrection of Jesus has been rightly called “the church age” or “the age of the bride.” The Lord had the legal authority to take His authority over the earth right after He had made atonement for it, but He did not for our sakes, so that we would have the opportunity to become sons and daughters of God, joint heirs with Christ.
God does not tempt us with evil, but as stated in Jeremiah 20:12 and other places, He does allow us to be tested. A test is different from a temptation, though a temptation can be a test just as it was for Adam and Eve. We are tested by the Lord to help us grow and to qualify us for advancement, just as we took tests in school to see if we could be promoted to the next grade. Advancement in the Lord includes more authority. Today, yes today; we are in our period of testing.
Don’t panic…. As Francis Frangipane likes to say, “You never fail one of God’s tests; you just keep taking them until you pass.” That is basically true. Israel kept going in circles for forty years in the wilderness because they could not pass certain tests that were required before they could enter their Promised Land. Today too many of us Christians do the same thing and keep going in circles in their spiritual life because they keep failing the same tests. It is now time to pass the tests and go on to possess our Promised Land.
Now, hear ye, hear ye…. There is another reason He has not taken His authority yet—rebellion against God and all of its consequences have to be fully revealed. If Jesus had taken His authority in the first century, there might forever be some who would question whether man could have ever been able to run this world without God. At the end of this age, that question will be forever settled. All of creation will have a clear witness that it is the ultimate folly to think that we can run this world without God. Rebellion against Him will always lead to the most terrible consequences. At the end of this age, the troubles that man creates for himself and the entire earth will be at the point where all would be completely lost if God did not intervene.
The root cause of every human problem is man trying to run this world without God. The answer to every human problem is to turn back to God. The root cause of almost every personal problem is found in trying to do things without God. The answer to them is to turn to the Lord.
The Apostle Paul warned that many followers would be deceived in the last days because they would only want to have their ears tickled, meaning they could not endure hearing anything difficult or challenging. If you make it through this message I will know you are not in that category because I am addressing the most difficult issues about discipleship first, such as the Lord’s statement in Luke 14:33: “So then, none of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions.”
Here we see that “many” will come to Him on that day having done extraordinary works in His name but will not be able to enter the kingdom of heaven! That the Lord did not “know” these who will be rejected is not the same word that is used to know who they are. The word used for “know” here is a deep and intimate relationship such as a husband and wife. This is the kind of relationship that God created man for, and only by having this relationship with God will we ever achieve a truly successful life regardless of what other works we may do. There is still time to have this relationship with Him. This is the greatest opportunity in all of creation. We must not waste it.
I just said that, “There are not many disciples, but there are some.” Some become disciples of other men; some become disciples of a certain movement, denomination, or doctrinal emphasis.
It took God knocking Paul off of his horse to break through what was truly blinding him. It takes God to do this for all of us, but it does not have to be as dramatic as Paul’s experience to get the final result. It may be better the way most do it who attain to this— (ready for this ?) They humble themselves instead of having the Lord humble them. We are told that we can judge ourselves and the Lord won’t have to do it.
Now, pull your toes in; I’m about to use Gods boots in the next section of this message.
At the Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief , we witnessed the helplessness of those who were accustomed to having the government provide for their needs. In other areas we got reports of this helplessness gave way to gripping fear, and then the fear quickly turned into an insane rage, to the point that they even began to shoot at their rescuers.
We became engaged in the Katrina relief, primarily in the assistance of damaged homes, because we received a word from the Lord that we needed to experience what was happening there in order to understand the times. We got an education very fast. In that situation you could look at any group and quickly detect which ones worked for a living and which ones depended on the government. The difference was striking.
Those who were use to living off of the government were the ones that lied on their report of sums of money they had received for relief from both their insurance and from FEMA. Little did they know I had records in my computer directly to FEMA with this information.
