Synopsis of Spiritual Adultery

Good and joyful day today to all Christian brothers and sisters on this the day the Lord has made. Pull up a chair, pour yourself a cup of coffee, or tea, or milk, or whatever is your favorite, we’re about to slice a piece of the Bread of Life, the Word of God. And today’s slice comes from:  Romans 7:1-4 ~Released from the Law  Now, dear brothers and sisters – you who are familiar with the law – don’t you know that the law applies only to a person who is still living? 2 Let me illustrate. When a woman marries, the law binds her to her husband as long as he is alive. But if he dies, the laws of marriage no longer apply to her. 3 So while her husband is alive, she would be committing adultery if she married another man. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law and does not commit adultery when she remarries. 4 So this is the point: The law no longer holds you in its power, because you died to its power when you died with Christ on the cross. And now you are united with the one who was raised from the dead. As a result, you can produce good fruit, that is, good deeds for God.

Also, concerning Judah, the Holy Spirit, through the Prophet Jeremiah said:              Jeremiah 3:8-9 ~ Faithless Israel Called to Repentance ~ During the reign of King Josiah, the LORD said to me, “Have you seen what fickle Israel does? Like a wife who commits adultery, Israel has worshiped other gods on every hill and under every green tree. 7 I thought that after she had done all this she would return to me. But she did not come back. And though her faithless sister Judah saw this, 8 she paid no attention. She saw that I had divorced faithless Israel and sent her away. But now Judah, too, has left me and given herself to prostitution. 9 Israel treated it all so lightly – she thought nothing of committing adultery by worshiping idols made of wood and stone. So now the land has been greatly defiled.

Most of the time, when the old testament speaks of adultery and fornication, it is speaking of idolatry. In other words, the Lord looked at Himself as Israel’s husband. He said so through the Prophet Isaiah:  “Fear not; you will no longer live in shame. The shame of your youth and the sorrows of widowhood will be remembered no more, 5 for your Creator will be your husband. The LORD Almighty is his name! He is your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, the God of all the earth.”

The Lord, as Israel’s Husband, demanded faithfulness to Him, as should be obvious. Warning’ after warning the Lord had no choice but to divorce the nation, which He did. Scripture speaks of marriage, of one man and one woman, and also of divorce and remarriage.

Matthew 19:8 Jesus replied, “Moses permitted divorce as a concession to your hard-hearted wickedness, but it was not what God had originally intended. 9 And I tell you this, a man who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery – unless his wife has been unfaithful.” The key part of this verse is …. “unless his wife has been unfaithful. And if such a marriage is dissolved because one party engages such a lifestyle, the innocent party, whether husband or wife, is free to marry again. So, when the Lord divorced Israel, which He was forced to do because of their fornication, that is their idolatrous lifestyle, He then married, one might say, the Church.”

Exodus 20:4 “Do not make idols of any kind, whether in the shape of birds or animals or fish.5 You must never worship or bow down to them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not share your affection with any other god! I do not leave unpunished the sins of those who hate me, but I punish the children for the sins of their parents to the third and fourth generations. 6 But I lavish my love on those who love me and obey my commands, even for a thousand generations.

This speaks of trusting in things other than Christ and the Cross. This is proven in the parable in Revelations of the seven angels which had seven vials and who spoke to the Apostle John, saying, “Come hither; I will show unto you the judgment of the “great whore” who sits upon the many waters.” Here the great whore refers to all the religions of the world that have ever been; that have been devised by men as a substitute for “Jesus Christ and Him crucified.” And, “great waters” refers to the multitudes of people.

Many of the nations of the world have been ruled by religion devised by man; even parts of Christianity, that have been corrupted. I am trying to emphasize the point that the Holy Spirit labels every way, supposedly of God, that is not “Jesus Christ and Him Crucified” is the wrong way, or be in known as spiritual fornication. Anything other is polluted, corrupted, which has always been and still is the unredeemed way of the world; the attempt to manufacture another god other than Jehovah; while the Church itself attempts to manufacture another sacrifice, of their doing, other than “Jesus Christ and Him Crucified.”

Back to chapter 7 of the book of Romans, where Paul said, “Wherefore, my Brethren, you also are become dead to the Law.” The law is not dead, per se, but we area dead to the law because we are dead to its effects; meaning we are not to try to live for God by means of the “law,” be it the law of Moses or laws made up by other men or even ourselves. How is that? Bro. Dick? Because the Crucifixion of Christ satisfied the demands of the broken law that we could not, and still cannot, accomplish. He did it already…. past tense! We are to look only at “Jesus Christ and Him Crucified,” for the satisfaction of the Father God. Not…. Hear me…. Not man made religious laws made up by man or denominations.

Most Christians believe that they are living a life faithful only to Christ. But, one can only be truly faithful to Christ by trusting Him and what He has done for us at the cross. Man seems to always want to add to the Gospel of Christ by complicating its simplicity. We cannot…. I repeat… we cannot work our way to heaven. That bill has been paid for, and paid for dearly. If our faith is transferred to anything other than “Jesus Christ and Him Crucified,” the Lord will look at us as a “Spiritual Adulterer.”

Paul warned the church of Corinth in 2 Corinthians 11:3 But I fear that somehow you will be led away from your pure and simple devotion to Christ, just as Eve was deceived by the serpent. 4 You seem to believe whatever anyone tells you, even if they preach about a different Jesus than the one we preach, or a different Spirit than the one you received, or a different kind of gospel than the one you believed.

My friends, Jesus Christ is the source and the Cross is the means. What do you mean by that, Bro. Dick? It is rather simple. It means that the “source” of everything we receive from God is the Lord Jesus Christ, and the “means” by which He gives these things to us, whatever it may be, is the Cross.

This shoots down every other means of sanctification, consecration, cleansed of defilement; what ever term you prefer…. such as Purpose Driven Life, Word of Faith, and/or denominationalism. In other words anything devised by man and not originated by the Holy Spirit. Remember Him? He is the third person of the Holy Trinity. He is the living spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ who is presently at the right hand of our Father who art in Heaven. Should He, the Holy Spirit, not rule the Church ( that’s us ), rather than man made rules and regulations.

Before the Cross, it was a lamb, which was an innocent victim, and which served as a Substitute until Christ would come. While it was insufficient to “take away sins,” it nevertheless served as a stopgap measure, so to speak, until the Reality, Christ, would come. Hebrew 10:4 For it is not possible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. 5 That is why Christ, when he came into the world, said, “You did not want animal sacrifices and grain offerings. But you have given me a body so that I may obey you. 6 No, you were not pleased with animals burned on the altar or with other offerings for sin. 7 Then I said, ‘Look, I have come to do your will, O God – just as it is written about me in the Scriptures.’ ” 8 Christ said, “You did not want animal sacrifices or grain offerings or animals burned on the altar or other offerings for sin, nor were you pleased with them” (though they are required by the law of Moses). 9 Then he added, “Look, I have come to do your will.” He cancels the first covenant in order to establish the second. 10 And what God wants is for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all time.

Therefore, God would not accept the Sacrifice by Cain, being made of his own hands. But, He did accept the Sacrifice offered by Abel… the Sacrifice being accepted, Able was accepted also. Man’s problem has always been and still is that man attempts to substitute another sacrifice other than the Cross. When this is done…. “spiritual adultery” is the result.

This is so important, so significant, so absolute, that the Holy Spirit, through the Apostle Paul, in Galatians 1:8 said: Let God’s curse fall on anyone, including myself, who preaches any other message than the one we told you about. Even if an angel comes from heaven and preaches any other message, let him be forever cursed. 9 I will say it again: If anyone preaches any other gospel than the one you welcomed, let God’s curse fall upon that person. 10 Obviously, I’m not trying to be a people pleaser! No, I am trying to please God. If I were still trying to please people, I would not be Christ’s servant.

Notice…. “…any other message than the one we told you about.” What message was it that Paul was referring to? “Jesus Christ and Him Crucified.” Where did you get that idea from, Bro. Dick?

1. Jesus is the only way to God John 14:6

2. The only way to Jesus Christ is through the Cross Luke 9:23

3. The only way to the Cross is denial of self Luke 9:23

4. If any man will come after me let him deny himself 1 Corinthians 1-17

May I repeat myself?  The only gospel that the Lord will recognize is “Jesus Christ and Him Crucified.” Anything else constitutes “spiritual adultery.”
