Synopsis of Intimacy with God

Good and joyful morning this morning, to all Christian brothers and sisters on this the day the lord has made. Pull up a chair, pour yourself a cup of coffee, or tea, or milk, or whatever is your favorite…. We’re about to slice a piece of the bread of life, the word of God.

Romans 12:1   KJV   I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 and be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. 3 for I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

Romans 12:1  TLB   And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice – the kind he will accept. When you think of what he has done for you, is this too much to ask? 2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will know what God wants you to do, and you will know how good and pleasing and perfect his will really is.

In plain English God is telling us don’t let the world squeeze you into it’s mold. We have come to identify ourselves by what we know rather than who we are in his eyes. You know, the Europeans are baffled that we introduce ourselves with a hand shake and the next question seems to be where do you work, or, what do you do for a living. That is the banner we wear….. what we know. Or, we want to know which university we graduated from. We let our titles and our degrees dictate who we are.

We seem to be interested in… how much do you know. You might say that our heads are constipated with knowledge. The same goes for bible knowledge. Being able to quote scripture by the letter makes us seem very holy. All we read, study, hear in sermons, etc. Is information only unless we become intimate with God through his holy spirit so as to get revelation of what we read. Information is nothing without revelation.

For a number of years I did the interviewing of soon to graduate engineers at several colleges in order to choose those my company wanted to hire. Then we selected those we thought most promising. It was amazing to watch young intelligent men and women begin to find that they did not know all they thought they knew. Working in their positions began to expand their knowledge into something valuable to the company. They were getting intimate with the company and through that process they were gaining revelation. Information is nothing without revelation.

Revelation, in the business world, or in God’s word, has a purpose, and that purpose is transformation. What did this morning’s slice of bread of life say…… but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.

Lets not stop there….. Transformation’s purpose is application. Right… now that your thinking has been transformed you become valuable to your employer, or to God, and you can and should then apply yourself and your knowledge. Now then, you are valuable, to your employer, and/ or to God, to do that which you have been hired for….. Or have been created for. Application then has a purpose….. And that is impartation.

Now you are at a point in your purpose that you can impart your knowledge to others. In your work you help others as a team. It is with such that new inventions are found, product changes happen, and raises are given. In God’s world impartation allows you to impart, or convey, your knowledge and expertise to others, such as teaching sunday school, or sharing in group prayer meetings, or….. Or…. Witnessing. Yes, witnessing is not beating someone over the head with a list of shalt and shalt nots. It is simply testifying what God has done for you in your needs and moments of intimacy with the holy spirit.

Yes….. God did not create Adam and Eve, and therefore us, because he wanted a gardener….. He wanted intimacy.

We were created for His pleasure. We too often live as though God created us for our own pleasure, but, not so.

Revelation 4:8  ….and the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, holy, holy, holy, lord God almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever, the four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, thou art worthy, o lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

And how about Psalm 147:11 The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy. And, Psalm 149:4  …for the lord taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.

And when speaking of spiritual death of his children he said in Ezekiel 18:32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the lord God: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye. Hebrew 10:38 says, Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

Oh, that we should drink of the well of his presence. We do this by experiencing what the word speaks. We are to realize that the bible is for us to experience not just analize.

The Psalmist in writing the book of Psalms said it rightly…. 42:1 As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, o God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God. Lets examine what we are to experience from this verse…. First a hart is a small deer …… and a water brook is a stream or creek, or if you’re from the west, a crick. The little deer panteth, that is he is out of breath. But why? When he is being chased by a predator, danger exists, he is out of breath heading for the brook in order to get under the water to hide in the brook. So as he is rushing to hide in the water, Lord; our soul is wanting to hide in your presence. We thirsteth for you the presence of our living God. When can I come and appear before you, lord?

Go to the well Christ promised. Go to the water brook and hide in his presence when you’re in trouble. Troubles like, marital problems, financial problems, child raising problems…. whatever. Get away from mulling over your regrets for past failures, or wrong decisions. Bring it to the lord; he wants you to run to him as the deer panteth. But, you don’t want to tell your secrets to strangers, so it is necessary to become acquainted with God personally.

Remember that Abraham was a well digger. And the purpose of the well was more than for drinking water. The word well has a double meaning. A place to drink of and “ayin” in Hebrew means “to see”. So it was a place to encounter God, in order to be birthed into your destiny.

Lets examine the construction of the wells dug in those days. It was narrow at the top but widened as it got deeper. Therefore the water, you might say, was in layers. All too often we drink only of the top of the well. We are satisfied with the salvation layer. We got our insurance policy against an eternal hell, that’s all we need. But as the well deepens it widens and the next layer is being filled….. with the Holy Spirit….. which is communication between earth and heaven. The next layer of water is the experience of revelation. Revelation will come in small swallows at a time. Remember that in the book of revelation God provided small moments to see in.

What do you mean by revelation to me by God? Don’t box yourself in by thinking that all, I mean everything has been said in the bible and there is no more. Don’t limit God with such thoughts. Provision will arrive at departure time of your assignment. More about that later. Think of it this way……… at the well of God’s presence you are the bucket. I use to have a friend that always said that we were only a mud jug. He referred to the fact that we were the clay in the hands of the potter. Well, I guess if we can be a mud jug, we can be an oaken bucket.

Now that you are the bucket remember that you are attached by the rope of scripture and it is attached to the beam…. the heart of God. See….. You’re in a safe environment.

Oh, oh, what is that I see around the well. Why, it’s briars. And with large thorns. What has caused them to grow there? Cults…. Deception…. Worldliness…. caused by people getting revelation and calling attention to the revelation rather than calling attention to God, and his wishes.

But, Bro Dick, why should I need revelation? Because we cannot solve the problems we have with the same mind set that created them. Even the psychologists say that doing the same thing we’ve done before and expecting different results is a sign of insanity.
