Truth – How To Know It

Synopsis of Truth – how to know it

We’re about to slice a piece of the bread of life, the word of god.  And today’s slice comes from John 15:5 “But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and none of you has asked me where I am going. Instead, you are very sad. But it is actually best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the counselor won’t come. If I do go away, he will come because I will send him to you.”

And when he comes, he will convince the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.

The world’s sin is unbelief in me. Righteousness is available because I go to the father, and you will see me no more. Judgment will come because the prince of this world has already been judged.

“Oh, there is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now. When the spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not be presenting his own ideas; he will be telling you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring me glory by revealing to you whatever he receives from me.

15 All that the father has is mine; this is what I mean when I say that the spirit will reveal to you whatever He receives from me.

Today’s news is no longer reporting of the news. It is the making of the news, by those celebrities telling us what they think. Or being in every blow-hard they can find to do likewise. There is the war on terror and the war in Iraq. There is the question of what the president elect will bring. Every talking head on TV will be pontificating about how the wars going, the bailouts and the economy and how the world is going to end in a sudden flood then freeze in a worldwide block of ice. Perhaps you have seen the movie: The Day After Tomorrow. It’s about the end of the earth due to the greenhouse effect. The producers actually thought that this absolute fantasy of a movie might raise consciousness about global warming. If there is one thing I have learned in life it’s that everybody has their own version of the truth.

Yes….. We have to try and find the truth among all the truths that present themselves to us. It is very hard these days to know who to believe. Everyone is trying to lead us to their version of truth.

In 1997, Nathan Zohner, a 14-year-old student at eagle rock junior high school in Idaho falls won first prize at the greater Idaho Falls science fair by showing how conditioned we have become to alarmists spreading fear of everything in our environment through junk science. In his project he urged people to sign a petition demanding strict control or total elimination of the chemical “di-hydrogen monoxide” because:

1. It can cause excessive sweating and vomiting.

2. It is a major component in acid rain.

3. It can cause severe burns in its gaseous state.

4. Accidental inhalation can kill you.

5. It contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape..

6. It decreases the effectiveness of automobile brakes.

7. It is found in tumors of terminal cancer patients.

He asked 50 people if they would support a ban of this chemical. *43 said yes * six were undecided *and only one knew that the chemical, di-hydrogenmonoxide, ……… is … Water.

I just about fell out of my chair when I found the website Apparently some prankster has taken this little spoof to a whole new level. The website looks official, with a real action committee feel to it. You can even buy the t-shirt with your mastercard or visa. The page reads: “You can help us to continue spreading the word about dihydrogen monoxide by purchasing one or more of these high-quality, 100% cotton t-shirts. They make great gifts for yourself, coworkers, friends, family and that geek, nerd, or chemist in your life!” Then it assures the customer: “Our t-shirts are dhmo free.” Of course it is ……..ever try wearing a t-shirt made out of water?

Jesus said to his disciples, “I have much more to say to you, more than I can possibly say to you now under the circumstances. But when the holy spirit comes he will guide you into all truth.”

Think about those words of Jesus. He will “lead us into all truth.”

How do you ever find firm ground to stand on an issue?

FIRST, you find through the spirit who, Jesus says, is the spirit of truth. This is the job of the Holy Spirit to point to the truth, to guide us to truth. Let me ask you… When you decide what to believe in terms of your faith is it more like guessing the number of beans in a jar or choosing your favorite song? Let me say, in no uncertain terms, that faith is like guessing how many beans there are in the jar. Faith is certain. Faith is not vague. Faith is not a matter of opinion.

It may not matter how you were baptized, whether you were sprinkled or dunked, but it matters whether you were baptized. It may not matter your denomination, Methodist or Baptist, but it does matter whether you are a Christian.

SECOND, the spirit of truth will set you free. We all say it to our children. It is one of the greatest concepts of Jesus’ teaching. But there is a problem. There is a requirement. When you have found the truth you have to stand in that truth. It is not enough to know what the truth is; you must act upon it. Many of us, when confronted with an issue …know what the right thing to do is. The question is will we act on what we know to be true.

There are three difficulties with truth. ∙ the first is to find it. ∙ the second is to act upon it. ∙ the third is to speak it. The church (us, not the building) must speak the truth. We are not the bearers of some of the truth or half the truth. We Christians are the bearers of all the truth. Jesus is not a way to God he is the way. Our heavenly father did not send a representative to earth, Hhe sent His only son. It may sound arrogant to those outside the Christian church but we can do nothing less. We are under oath. We are his followers bound by what we have heard the spirit reveal to our hearts and obligated to speak it to the world. And we need His guidance during a time of chaos.
