Synopsis of Peace Beyond Understanding

Good and joyful morning to all Christian brothers and sisters on this holy day that the lord has made. Pull up your favorite chair, pour yourself a cup of coffee, or tea, or milk, or whatever is your favorite…

We are about to slice a piece of the bread of life…. The word of God.  But, first it’s time for my favorite prayer..   Dear lord, so far today, I am doing alright…… I have not gossiped, lost my temper, been greedy, nasty, selfish or grumpy. I have not whined, complained, cursed, or eaten any chocolate.

But, I will be getting out of bed in a minute, and I think I will really need your help.

In this series of fruit of the spirit… lets look at “peace.” Oh…. Did I hear you say, Brother Dick, not today…. if you only knew what I’m going through. Dear saint, you may be going through deep waters. I don’t mean temptations, sin, or trials necessarily; I’m talking about events that are being thrust on you that are overwhelming. Things that you can’t understand, winds and waves of life that are flooding over you. They may be coming to your home, to your job, to your church. But, God wants to carry you through it all.

Read with me….. first, from King James

KJV Philippians 4:6   Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 and the peace of god, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Now from NLT Philippians 4:6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell god what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 if you do this, you will experience god’s peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

Notice that Paul says nothing, in this verse, about receiving a word of direction, or deliverance, or miracles or healings. Instead, he says, we receive a gift…. The Gift of the peace of God! In other words God’s first answer to our every prayer and heart-cry is his peace!

How often, we wrestle with the Lord in prayer. “Oh God, why don’t you answer?” “What’s blocking my prayers.” “What have I done to grieve you Lord.”

The fact is God has already said to us, “here— here is my peace that passes understanding! Take it — let it rule in your heart while I work out all things for your good.”

Have you ever noticed that sometimes when you’re working with your computer it seems to just be sitting there doing nothing. So we get nervous and start hitting keys. It is really busy…… it is “working in the background.”

We get that way with elevators too. When it does not come to our floor as fast as we think it should…. We push, push, push the button again and again. It’s working on the inside.

Sometimes we are that way with God also. We get anxious when He is working in the background. He may be allowing certain events to occur to pave the way to our prayer answer. Trust him. He is wise. He is omniscient…. All knowing.

Let me also say that peace of the heart and peace of the mind can only come when there is obedience to God. Remember, peace ended in the garden of Eden because of disobedience.

Friends, God did not give us the ten commandments for his benefit. Or to use as a whip. He gave them to us for our well being. Peace cannot reign where there is: lying, stealing, cheating.

Then…. we can…. as Philippians 4:6 stated. “be careful for nothing.”

There is probably more searching for peace in the world today than ever before. And Satan is having a hay-day offering his counterfeits.…… entertainment, liquor, tranquilizers, drugs, free love, false religions, occult powers. But when each of these bubbles break, what is left? Headaches and heartaches for those who tried them….. and for their families and friends. But, praise the lord, Jesus can provide peace beyond understanding. It’s not a cliché or a slick sounding promo. He was and He is serious about it……. He died for it!

Chapter two of Ephesians seem to talk to us today….

Ephesians 2:12 In those days you were living apart from Christ. You were excluded from god’s people, israel, and you did not know the promises god had made to them. You lived in this world without god and without hope.    13 but now you belong to Christ Jesus Though you once were far away from god, now you have been brought near to him because of the blood of Christ. 14 for Christ himself has made peace between us Jews and you Gentiles by making us all one people. He has broken down the wall of hostility that used to separate us.
