We’re about to slice a piece of the Bread of Life, the Word of God. And today’s slice comes from: HEB 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily hinders our progress. And let us run with endurance the race that God has set before us. 2 We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, on whom our faith depends from start to finish.
First of all who are the huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith. Matthew Henry concordance says. The persevering obedience of faith in Christ, was the race set before the Hebrews, wherein they must either win the crown of glory, or have everlasting misery for their portion; and it is set before us.
Let’s key-in on two thought on the verse we just read….. let us strip off every weight that slows us down And, keeping our eyes on Jesus. Lets examine just what “weight” we could rid ourselves of that might cause us to take our eyes off of Jesus? How about ….. the 5 D’s of weight that takes our eyes off of Jesus.
Distractions: those things that keep us from being able to concentrate, that preoccupy our minds that draw us away, divert or disturb.
Discouragements: unfulfilled expectations, delays, etc. anything that causes us to lose courage or even the will to continue on the course set before us.
Disillusionment: defined as “disappointment resulting from the discovery that something is not as good as one believed it to be.” In our context, we so concerned with our own individual world that we take our eyes off of the whole picture as God might see it. It’s not about my bank account or stock portfolio, but the whole economy that will take food off the shelves of the homeless or needed.
Defeat: this may be referred to as battle fatigue. Literally, failures, or defeats that may be real or may be perceived. Defeats can be used to strengthen us for the journey or they can also be used to take us off course or even out of the race.
Diversions: that might be termed “unfruitful course changes that take us off the ‘main things’ ” and produce delays or hindrances along the way. Delays do not necessarily spell failure or defeat….
How about the Three P’s Keeping Eyes on Jesus.”
“The Past”: this may apply to individuals pressing on past their past… did you catch that….“pressing on past their own past?” But it also applies to the broader Body of Christ to press on past the way things have been in the past. !
“The Press”: As the level of Holy Spirit activity increases and the “press” begins to report on what God is doing, we must be careful to press on past the press. It’s not about us, or our wants, desires, and stuff. If we are not careful we might find ourselves running the play…. But to the wrong goal post.
“The Purse”: obviously, this refers to finances and may speak to us to press on past the “purse”. Remember, it is He who has determined what is the prize He wishes for us, how to obtain it, and when.
I encourage you to take this matters to prayer on behalf of the application of your own life and that of the broader Body of Christ. I believe the Lord is calling us to not only look at our individual position in these troubled times, but that of our brothers. With that in mind I looked up verses of scripture that referred to the phrase “one another.”
Would you believe I found 35 verses that uses the phrase, “one another. I believe the Lord gave the above scriptures as “antidotes” for us to use in such troubling times as these.
He is, I believe, calling us to continue to stand and fight for freedom to keep our Eyes on the Prize. Only God has and can give absolute freedom. He is not controlled from the outside. It is time to declare an EXODUS from all bondage.
The Lord is gathering Freedom Fighters as a remnant and is positioning them in the enemy’s camp. Those of you who have been listening to me for a long time, I, each year, have preached a series of messages on the recapturing of the Seven Mountains of Culture. They are: Economy, Government, Media, Family, Education, Entertainment/Arts and Religion. I mentioned then and now that God is placing his Freedom Fighters in these areas we have lost.
Prayer strategies from the last season will be of no affect in this season. I now think of how the Lord told the disciples, “This kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting” (Matthew 17:21).
Let me ask you….. Is the American Dream worth fighting a spiritual warfare over?? All over the world people desire to come to America to experience the wealth and success of what they believe is the American dream. However, the definition of the American dream has changed over the years. Today it means the opportunity for success, but in 1774 when the phrase was first used, it encompassed a dream of freedom. To them, it was not speaking of mere human riches or of just having their needs met, it meant much more – it was the ability to be free in their spirit, where they could have the opportunity to pursue God and be led by Him – to build a land that would know Him and experience the success of life in Him. God has a similar dream for America – America was born to literally change the world – you are meant to change the world!
