Synopsis of Reclaiming the Mountain of Education
Today’s slice of the bread of life, the Word of God, comes from Proverbs 22:6:
Teach your children to choose the right path, and when they are older, they will remain on it. (NLT)
Life application notes of the New Living Testament version of the Bible states that when parents teach a child how to make decisions, they don’t have to watch every step he or she takes. They know their children will remain on the right path because the children have made the choice themselves.
I believe that the beginning of education starts at birth, by the God-given parents. However, at some point we turn our children over to the established educational system of the country. It is of this system that I speak today.
As an industrial instructor, I always divided my curriculum into two parts. I first taught the “knowledge” of the subject; and then I taught the “skill” portion, or what we might call the “hands-on” session. We must understand what we are to do, and how it is best done, prior to learning to do.
So, I believe that an apt description of education is: knowledge and skill, obtained or developed by a learning process. However, in America education has been hijacked from it’s original objective of learning. Let me explain.
America’s first public school was established in 1635 by noted Puritan minister John Cotton. Virtually all early public schools had ministers as headmasters. Reading, writing, and arithmetic were always of secondary value compared to the instruction in the ways of preparing for life. Students need to know how to relate to, and how to orbit around, who God is and what he expects…
