Synopsis of Thanksgiving in George county
( Audio button below this synopsis )
We’re about to slice a piece of the bread of life, the Word of God. And today’s slice comes from:
PSA 69:30 I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving. 31 This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or bullock that hath horns and hoofs. 32 The humble shall see this, and be glad: and your heart shall live that seek God. 33 For the LORD heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners.34 Let the heaven and earth praise him, the seas, and every thing that moveth therein.
This Sunday morning service will, no doubt, have it’s choir sing magnificent songs. How wonderful it is to listen to a choral group sounding seemingly as one powerful voice…. with sopranos, altos, tenors and basses singing together It brings to my mind that every member of this great county has a different part as we work together and praise the Lord together. We come from various backgrounds, have different abilities and personalities, belong to different denominations but…. we are in harmony when we worship the same Lord and Savior.
It is this unity….. Notice I did not say uniformity…. that God called his children to when forming this Christian nation.
I’d like to read to you just one comment Christopher Columbus wrote in his book, of memoirs…. which is to be found in the libraries of spain, written in Spanish, but never published in this country. “It was the Lord who put into my mind, (I could feel his hand upon me.) The fact that it would be possible to sail from here to the Indies. All who heard of my project rejected it with laughter. There is no question that the inspiration was from the holy spirit because he comforted me with rays of inspiration from the holy scripture.”
Did you know the name Christopher means Christ bearer? What if Columbus’s discovery was not accidental at all? Did God plan for America? The people who first came here, the pilgrims, knew that they were led here by the Lord, to found a nation where men, women and children were to live in obedience to him, and to be, One Nation Under God.
In this fall season we set aside a special day of thankfulness to God, s we continue a celebration started by the pilgrim at their first thanksgiving. Let me tell you about…… how the pilgrims were mercilessly taken advantage of, at times having to borrow money at interests rates of 30% to 50%. But these Christian colonists were set on responding in the spirit of their Lord….. Matthew 5:38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘an eye for and eye, and a tooth for a tooth,’ but I say to you… if anyone would sue you and take your coat, let him have your cloak as well.”
They paid every claim assessed to them, no matter how fraudulent ….. And finally… in 1645 they were able to buy themselves clear of the adventurers. But, at a fearful cost. It took twenty thousand pounds to retire a debt of eighteen hundred. Bradford had to sell a large farm…. Alden and Standish, sold three hundred acres each….. And Winslow and Prence lost their homes. Before I go any further let me ask you to do something.
Stop what you are doing and picture in your mind’s eye…………… 5 kernels of corn in a plate. In 1621 they had enter a starving time and were ultimately reduced to a daily ration of ……… Five kernels of corn for each person.
May I suggest that today instead of focusing on the traditional areas of food, family and friends, let’s thank God for that which we cannot lose. We can thank Him for the food but it may be gone tomorrow. We can thank Him for life, but we may be gone tomorrow. We can thank Him for many things that will all go in a vapor. But we can also thank Him for something that we cannot lose
I want to ask you a question. What ever happened to the concept of enough? Enough use to be a roof that didn’t leak. Enough use to be plenty of chairs on the porch and around the table. Enough was food, safety from the elements. Enough was a little help for a friend in need
It seems that when we have more …. We never have enough. It is not he that has less ….but he that wants more….. that is poor.
